The origins of the trident logo begins in Bologna, Italy, where the Maserati brothers started the company in 1914. World renowned for its gorgeous architecture and vibrant arts culture, Bologna is home to the Fountain of Neptune, a 16th century Renaissance era sculpture that’s prominently displayed in one of the city’s major piazzas, or town square. Paying homage to the Roman god of the sea, the statue of Neptune holds a three-pronged spear, the original trident that inspired one of the Maserati brothers to adopt this as their company emblem. 

Evolution of the Logo 

The first vehicle to don the Trident logo is the 1926 Maserati Tipo 26, the brand’s first ever production vehicle. The original logo featured a bold Trident set against a red and blue oval background, representing the colors of the city of Bologna. Over the years, Maserati made subtle changes to the Trident logo, with slight colour enhancements in the 1950s, and a more significant update in the 1980s to create a sleeker and more contemporary look. The company removed the oval background, leaving the Trident to stand alone as the centerpiece, emphasizing the power and elegance of the Trident.
